Síle O'Driscoll
Senior Lifestyle & Travel Editor
Specialising in accessible coastal walking routes and leisure travel planning for active retirees across Dublin and the wider Leinster region.
The Story Behind the Routes
Síle O'Driscoll grew up in Howth village and spent her childhood exploring the coastal paths and harbour areas that would later become her professional focus. Walking wasn't just something you did on weekends — it's part of how you get to know a place. Those early mornings on the pier, the afternoon loops through the village, they shaped how she sees landscape and journey.
After completing her degree in Geography and Environmental Studies at University College Dublin, she worked as a heritage tour guide for five years. That's where the real learning happened. Leading walking groups taught her what people actually need when they're out on a route — where they need to rest, which steps are tricky, where the views hit differently depending on the time of day.
She transitioned into travel writing in 2010, publishing her first guidebook on Dublin Bay walks in 2012. That book won the Irish Travel Writers' Association Award for accessibility innovation. Not because it was flashy, but because it genuinely considered how people move through landscape at different paces and with different needs. Since then, she's authored guidebooks to 12 Irish coastal regions and contributed over 200 feature articles to publications including The Irish Times travel section, Wanderlust magazine, and RTE Lifestyle.
What drives her work is straightforward: retirement shouldn't limit exploration. It's an opportunity to discover Ireland's landscapes at a more reflective pace. She approaches every route with the mindset of someone who's walked these paths for decades — considering gradient, resting points, accessibility, and scenic value rather than athletic challenge. Every walk should feel achievable and rewarding, not like a test.

How Síle Approaches Travel Writing
Síle doesn't write about routes from a distance. She walks them repeatedly — in different seasons, different times of day, and always from the perspective of someone who might need to take it slowly. That's not a limitation. It's actually where the real detail comes from.
When she documents a route, she's thinking about the walker who wants to stop and rest halfway through, not the one racing against time. She notes where benches are placed, which sections catch afternoon light, where you can find shelter if the weather turns. These aren't footnotes — they're the substance of good travel writing.
Her work combines rigorous geographic knowledge with genuine empathy for different types of walkers. She's written for active retirees, people recovering from injury, families with children, and solo travellers seeking quiet routes. Every person deserves a walk that works for them, at their pace, with routes that don't pretend age or ability limitations don't exist.
"A good route isn't measured by how far it goes or how steep it climbs. It's measured by how good you feel when you finish it."
